MA and PhD studentships in Arts, Law, and Social Sciences
The Faculty of Arts, Law and Social Sciences seeks applications for 18 studentships, three of them funded by the AHRC, to commence in September 2012. The faculty currently has a lively postgraduate culture that includes 180 PhD students, and has ambitious plans to enhance our research environment in preparation for REF2014. Non-AHRC PhD studentships are provided over three years of full-time study; recipients are expected to offer up to 6 hours of teaching or research support in their subject areas. All studentships cover UK fees and costs of living at the research-council rates.

Cultures of the Digital Economy Research Institute PhD Studentships (2):
- Digital culture (which might include any from digital media theory, network politics, games and digital humanities).
- ‘The Internet of Things’: the global sharing of live sensor and control data through the internet, and the remote control of everyday digital systems. This research seeks to provide an understanding of global behaviour and interaction with digital systems and an evaluation of the future potential for the connected world.

Communication, Film and Media PhD Studentships (2):
- in any area of Media, Film or Cultural Studies but preference may be given to research into European cinema, avant-garde film making, digital politics, popular music, critical theory, gender, sexuality and ethnicity.

English Language, Literature and Creative Writing PhD Studentships (3):
- in any area of English Language or Literature (from the Medieval period to the present), including Creative Writing. One studentship, funded by the bequest of Shirley Skinner-Young, will be offered for research in Renaissance literature. Music, Drama and Performing Arts PhD Studentships (2):

Sociology PhD studentships (2):
in any area of Sociology or Criminology, including gender; social theory; the sociology of suffering; ethnicity, racism and cultural identity; the politics of race and science; transnational and comparative crime; offender profiling; human rights and victimisation. For Social Sciences applications please include a CV detailing any relevant teaching experience, a research proposal of 2000 words maximum detailing  a) provisional title b) context of the research c) research objectives  d) indicative research methods e) 10 key references, and an example of recent academic writing which should be sent with the application form to our admissions office.

History PhD Studentships (2):

Applications are welcome for 1 PhD studentship in Art and Design, within the areas of Fine Art, Illustration or Graphic Design, and 1 PhD studentship in Children’s Book Illustration, funded by the AHRC.
