Er, sorry to have to point this out, but this is a (rather excellent, in my opinion) spoof.

I trust that those who remember Mr.Hennimore's equally inspired contribution about a conference on paper clips some time ago will have instantly smelled a rat.

Dear Paul Simon Hennimore,

The skills, expertise and scope of the work for this job surely places it beyond that of a pre-course, volunteer/intern position? For example requiring ‘experience of supervising volunteers and senior staff’. This sounds like a management position, rather than an intern position?

The expectation of skills, experience and the time commitment (40 hours per week) seem disproportionate for an unpaid position for someone who has yet to do their training in Archives.

Debbie Usher.

Archivist intern position (full time)

The Lord Botherington Memorial Library, Archive and Digital Realm, in Huntingdon Green, are looking to appoint a full-time Archivist intern. This unique voluntary position, involves working from our repository and search room in Huntingdon Green for 40 hours per week.

This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone looking to undertake a career in archives. Working five days a week (with occasional weekend cover), you will have the opportunity (be expected) to catalogue our entire backlog of uncatalogued material, respond to most of our reader enquiries, work with senior managers across the board to implement a new social inclusion strategy, and develop an extensive outreach programme working with local and national media. In this role you will also be required to act as official archive manager for three and a half days each week.

The successful applicant will have a degree in History (preferably specialising in the landed gentry in post-war Britain), experience of cataloguing a range of material to a high degree of accuracy following international standards using Calm 2000, world class curatorial skills, experience of supervising volunteers and senior staff, and an obsessive interest in the work of the Lord Botherington Memorial Library.

This position reports to the Head of Heritage and Library Services (Huntingdon Green Council) and the Lord Mayor.

As stated this would be a fantastic opportunity for anyone looking to undertake a career in archives. We would also be happy to exploit any unemployed, newly qualified archivist if desperate enough to work for free.
