Research Assistant (Statistician)
HIV Epidemiology & Biostatistics Group, Research Department of Infection and Population Health, Institute of Epidemiology and Healthcare
The post-holder will be part of the HIV Epidemiology & Biostatistics Group in the Research Department of Infection and Population Health within the Institute of Epidemiology
and Healthcare. The Group contains a large number of statisticians and epidemiologists working on the design and analysis of studies of HIV infection. The main interests of the Group include clinic-based observational cohort studies, randomized trials, and
modelling studies related to HIV epidemiology. The Group is co-lead by Professors Andrew Phillips and Caroline Sabin.
The post is funded until 31 December 2015 and involves responsibility for statistical analysis and modelling relating primarily to HIV. It will involve input into design
and analysis of large observational studies. The applicant will primarily work on EuroSIDA, a large observational study of HIV infected patients from across Europe (details at
www.cphiv.dk), which is coordinated by the Copenhagen HIV Program (CHIP), Denmark. Suitable candidates will be encouraged to study for a part-time PhD.

DUTIES OF THE POST

Duties and Responsibilities

To support analyses of data from large, complex clinic-based observational studies.
·
To contribute to design and analysis of clinic-based research questions from collaborators within the EuroSIDA study group
·
To present findings based on original research for peer-review journals, as agreed with Professor Amanda Mocroft
·
The successful applicant would be encouraged to study for a part-time PhD based upon the research from the study
·
As required, to contribute to the undergraduate Evaluation of Evidence and Epidemiology courses as a statistical tutor, including teaching and facilitating tutorials, and supervising computer-based
practical sessions.

As required, to contribute to teaching on the Short-course on Methodological and Statistical Issues in Clinical HIV Research
·
To actively follow and promote UCL policies, including Equal Opportunities

To maintain an awareness and observation of fire and health and safety regulations
·
To carry out any other duties commensurate with the grade and purpose of the post, as requested by one of the line managers or the Head of Department
Within the Group analyses are performed in the statistical package SAS and it is important that the post-holder be prepared to use this package for analyses, to allow sharing
of code and expertise across the Group.
This job description reflects the present requirements of the post and as duties and responsibilities change/develop the job description will be reviewed and may be subject
to amendment in consultation with the postholder.
Other Duties
Subject to the regulations of the funding bodies, appropriately qualified members of research staff will be expected
to contribute to teaching and/or other departmental activities. At the present time this is estimated to amount to an absolute maximum of thirty contact teaching hours a year.

The post is graded as Grade 6, the salary for which ranges from £25,251 to £27,578 (excluding London Allowance of
£2,806).
The appointment is available from 1st October 2012 and is funded until 31 December 2015 in the first instance.
