UCL Research Department of Infection and Population Health is seeking applications from candidates for a 3 year funded PhD Studentship in epidemiology / medical statistics commencing in October 2012, to be based at the Royal Free site within the HIV Epidemiology and Biostatistics Group.

Studentship Description
The studentship will involve an epidemiological analysis of data from two observational studies of HIV outpatients: the ASTRA and CIPHER studies. ASTRA (Antiretrovirals, Sexual Transmission Risk and Attitudes) is a multicentre questionnaire study of approximately 3500 HIV outpatients recruited from UK centres. CIPHER (Cognitive Impairment in People with HIV in the European Region) is a sub-study of ASTRA concerned with neurocognitive function in individuals with HIV. ASTRA and CIPHER have both cross-sectional and prospective components. The cross-sectional data collection phase of the studies has taken place in 2011/2012, and is now nearing completion.

Person Specification
Applicants should hold a first or upper second class honours degree in a relevant subject (mathematics, statistics, or epidemiology) and an MSc in a relevant subject (medical statistics, epidemiology or related discipline). Excellent skills and experience in quantitative research methodology, statistical methods, analysis of large and complex datasets, data management, and the use of statistical software are all essential. Applicants should also have a strong interest in epidemiology and HIV, and excellent oral and written communication skills.

Eligibility
Applicants must be UK/EU nationals and must have been resident in the UK for three years immediately prior to starting a PhD to be eligible.
