Opportunities and Challenges for Local Energy
and Climate Initiatives in the United States

Professor Damian Pitt. Department of Urban and Regional Planning at Virginia Commonwealth University

Municipal initiatives to reduce local energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions have increased dramatically in the United States over the past five years, with over 1,000 localities now enrolled in the ICLEI Cities for Climate Protection program or the US Mayors Climate Protection Agreement. Early adopter communities have completed climate action plans and adopted innovative policies and programs for Greenhouse gas reduction. Professor Pitt will present the results of new research on the challenges that localities face in climate action planning and the role of collaboration and regional coordination in overcoming those challenges and fostering energy and climate change innovation.
