Yes, the Eva Amsen blog certainly is 'interesting' -- (http://easternblot.net/2012/06/23/science-its-a-geek-thing/) -- 'Science, it's a geek thing' is just as bad as 'Science, it's girl thing'.

I love (not) the line: "It’s not their girliness that prevents them from choosing science; it’s their lack of appreciation for intelligence." -- how arrogant, derogatory, elitist...

I'd much rather sign up for Alice Bell's 'Science, it's a people thing', instead of reaffirming the idea that science is a special club for people who pass the geek litmus test:

"Science isn’t a girl thing. Or a boy thing. Or a white thing. Or a posh thing. Or an old people thing. Or an atheist thing. Or a geek thing. At its best, as Deb Blum says, science is a people thing."

Eva Amsen has just written an interesting blog on this subject

http://easternblot.net/2012/06/23/science-its-a-geek-thing/

which points out two great projects tackling stereotypes of scientists and mathematicians:

http://lookslikescience.tumblr.com/

and

http://www.sciencecheerleader.com/

Perhaps in the end we have to acknowledge that we are all different, attracted to science for different reasons and with different interests outside the subject. We do career interviews with people working in maths (http://plus.maths.org/content/CareerII) and have found there is as much difference within the sets of female interviewees and male interviewees, as between them. No one project aiming to inspire people to study and work in science will appeal to all women or all men. Instead we need to present the real diversity of people behind the science and it's great to hear about projects such as these making a start on that.
