Hmmm - I worry about "not clever enough". Surely, as with most things in life, there is room in the really broad church of science , engineering and technology for the clever - and the not so clever. I think role models have to be achievable - "someone like me" and so maybe we don't always want the leaders, the clever, or the good-looking as role models, but the ones who have made good - and good as defined as all sorts of things - career, family, travel, but above all enthusiasm. Ages ago I remember Averil MacDonald (are you out there Averil?) telling me she was collecting case studies of 'failures' - those who had gone on to have interesting careers despite poor A levels, not going to uni, dropping out or whatever - on the grounds that kids were more likely to relate to them than someone who'd got straight A's, a first and then a PhD no sweat.

Emily: Or they come from socio-economic backgrounds that don't allow them to get a realistic view of scientific careers beyond what's presented in the media. Don't equate that with "not clever enough" - that same media does that enough already.

Sheila: Sadly, that is idealistic. I wish it were the case that we could all be ourselves and everything would work out, but obviously it isn't (I know this from experience). However, I do think it is the most fundamental thing - what we need to work on is showing people that "true to ourselves and true to them" is what matters.
