The intentions are probably very good, but the execution is not great.

Even if the videos behind the teaser are brilliant, even if the teaser does really appeal to teenage girls, I find the format flawed:
It's not easy this scicomm malarkey...

I dislike the sexy bit at the beginning with the guy but as much as that would not have appealed to me I know of several girls in the cosmetics industry who probably would have looked at science if they had seen that in their teens.  Ironically they know the basics of chemistry whilst announcing they are too thick and too girly for science purely because it is what makes the make up work.

The issue with role models is that you need a diverse group so that all the different personality types see that they can do it and it is not the province of one specific type.

Tee hee!  Check out the new EU video designed to get more girls to think science is cool.  Virtually unanimous derision on twitter - check out  #sciencegirlthing

It is SO astonishingly crap, I almost wonder if it's deliberately ironic?  I feel a bit for them, as I see what they were trying to do, but boy did they get it wrong!!

Spectacular bad timing also following immediately after new research that said girly type role models are counterproductive!  http://bps-research-digest.blogspot.co.uk/2012/06/girlie-scientist-role-models-could-do.html
