Cardiff School of Creative and Cultural Industries Research Seminars 2011/12:

Film Narrative, Ontology and Knowledge Production

Joanna Callaghan (University of Bedfordshire)

•    5-6pm, Tuesday 19 June
•    The Atrium, University of Glamorgan, 86-88 Adam Street, Cardiff CF24 2FN

Abstract:  Ontological Narratives’ is a practice led research project that creatively combines ontological systems and narrative form through the production of a series of films. The project seeks to formalise ideas related to philosophy and film practice into a coherent praxis that reflects epistemologically upon both disciplines. It does this by utilising ontological positions as creative material for the production of films that do not use abstract imagery to “represent” abstract thought but explore the limits of filmic narrative (i.e. the mis en scene) to communicate highly abstract concepts. To date three films have been produced. In 2012 the project will produce the most ambitious output to date, a feature length film based on Jacques Derrida’s book “The Post Card” funded through an AHRC research grant award.  In this paper I would like to elaborate on the project intentions and show some clips from completed works and work in progress. I’d also like to reflect on the premise that if film’s encounter with philosophy is to be more than mere illustration, how can we perform the production of knowledge within film itself?

Joanna Callagahan is a practising artist, producing work in film and video, installation and performance. She has worked as a producer in TV and radio in the UK and France, for Sky TV, Canal+, Eurosport and Radio France International. She has also worked freelance on independent productions for BBC, Channel 4 and ITV.  She is currently working on a national and international touring program of Australian artists’ film and video. She has exhibited and curated work in Australia, Mexico and the United Kingdom.
