ALISS One Day Summer Conference Supporting Diverse Student Populations Lanchester Library, Coventry University 22nd August 2012, 10.30a.m. - 4.00 p.m. Members £75 Non members £100 On 22nd August ALISS (Association of Librarians and Information Professionals in the Social Sciences) will be holding a one day conference on the topical issue of supporting diverse student populations. With the expansion of higher education. increasing numbers of 'non-traditional' students are entering the higher education sector and librarians must be willing and prepared to meet their many needs. This one day conference aims to showcase a number of interesting approaches and projects from UK university libraries. It interprets diversity in the widest sense to include: part time and distance learners, international students, students with disabilities and those from backgrounds who are unused to the demands of British higher education. Speakers will include: · Helen Clough, Learning and Teaching Librarian, Library Services, The Open University, who will explore how Elluminate can be used to deliver library training to distance/ part time learners. · Sue White, Subject Librarian, Coventry University who will focus upon the work of the library in delivering active study support for Black and ethnic minority students. · Anne-Marie Hayes, Subject Librarian, Coventry University, who organised Celebrating diversity: LGBT History Month Library Exhibition · Kirsty Kift, supporting students with disabilities in Coventry University Library · A member of a collaborative project team, involving Coventry, Nottingham, De Montfort and Loughborough Universities, will talk about the creation of an Online Open Access Information Skills Resource for Researchers and offer insights into how free, open access tutorials can be developed to support researchers remotely This presentation gives an overview of a project involving four institutions: Loughborough, Nottingham, De Montfort and Coventry Universities to create an open source repurposable information skills tutorial appropriate for early career researchers.This presentation gives an overview of a project involving four institutions: Loughborough, Nottingham, De Montfort and Coventry Universities to create an open source repurposable information skills tutorial appropriate for early career researchers. · Simone Ngozi Okolo, Academic Services and Skills Manager, and Robin Stinson, Subject Librarian for Social Sciences, will present an introduction to the role of UEL London in supporting non-traditional students in East London In order to promote discussion and exchange experience, the intention is to mount an exhibition of posters on any aspects of supporting students or staff in libraries, which participants would like to share. Delegates are therefore positively encouraged to bring such material with them and take an active part in the day.
