Translation Workshop and Roundtable on Staging Translated Plays in the UK

12 July 2012, Lancaster University

http://www.lancs.ac.uk/fass/events/jelinek/index.htm

This event is aimed at aspiring and professional theatre translators, as well as people interested in staging translated foreign language plays in the UK. It is part of a series of events in Lancaster between 11 and 13 July 2012 that celebrate the UK premiere of Sports Play by Austrian Nobel Prize Winner Elfriede Jelinek and include a major academic conference on the work of this writer with a particular emphasis on sport, translation and issues of cultural understandingThe translation workshop can be visited as a stand-alone event, and is of interest to anybody working in promoting foreign languages in the UK arts scene.

In the first half of the morning, translator Penny Black will run a workshop where you can hear about her experience of translating Jelinek’s Sport Play, and then have a go at 'performing' the act of translation on selected excerpts of texts for theatre. The workshop will focus on generic issues of translation, and include activities that can be undertaken by those who, in Penny’s words, ‘speak any language from French to Mandarin’.

In the second half of the morning get your chance to listen to theatre professionals about the ins and outs of the whole production process behind introducing work from different linguistic and cultural backgrounds into UK theatres.

Roundtable participants include:

Giles Croft, Artistic Director of the Nottingham Playhouse, Nottingham

Peter Mikl, Director Austrian Cultural Forum, London

Berislav Juraic, Creative Producer, Just a Must Theatre Company, London

Andrew Walby, Senior Editor, Oberon Books, London

Vanda Butkovic, Theatre Director, Just a Must Theatre Company, London
