Dear John,

Fietsberaad finalized a publication for road authorities with recent knowledge on the relationship between cyclist safety and infrastructure. Unfortunately it is only available in Dutch. The link is http://www.fietsberaad.nl/library/repository/bestanden/Publicatie%2019b_printversie.pdf <http://www.fietsberaad.nl/library/repository/bestanden/Publicatie%2019b_printversie.pdf>

Chapter 4 is about blind spot crashes with right turning lorries. Section 4.3.1 provides solutions for intersections with traffic lights:

- a separate lights phase for cyclists and motorists. Also with a specific variation: giving cyclist traffic from all directions green light at the same time. This could be suitable if there is more cyclist traffic than motor traffic.

- If the other solutions are not possible and there is no possibility to redirect bicycle and pedestrian paths away from the middle of the junction, you could consider staggered stopping lines. See for instance± http://www.tctubantia.nl/regio/middentwente/8937308/Brede-fietsopstelstroken-op-nieuwe-kruising.ece

A good study that the Fietsberaad publication refers to is a German study by BASt: http://www.bast.de/nn_42718/DE/Publikationen/Berichte/unterreihe-f/2007-2000/f54.html <http://www.bast.de/nn_42718/DE/Publikationen/Berichte/unterreihe-f/2007-2000/f54.html>

It contains a summary in English.

I hope this is useful for you.

Best regards,

Paul Schepers

I'm looking for information regarding the design of ASL's in Denmark. My recollection from cycling there is that cyclists have a separate lights phase at ASL's, with cyclists moving off some 20 - 30 seconds before motorised traffic.

Does anyone know where I can access a copy of the (preferably English language) design standard for ASL's, preferably with an explanation to support that configuration?

Many thanks

John Meudell
