POSITION TITLE: Biostatistician

DIVISION / SECTION: Biostatistics and Data Management Team

SUPERVISOR: Senior Biostatistician

CLASSIFICATION LEVEL: Academic Level A/B

SALARY RANGE: $52,117 - $88,415  (i.e. about 33,000 – 56,000 GBP)

STATUS (FTE): 0.5-1.0 FTE – 1 year term (with possibility of extension)

 

 

SUMMARY OF POSITION:

An exciting new opportunity exists to join the Biostatistics and Data Management Team at Menzies School of Health Research in Darwin. We are seeking a highly motivated and resourceful person with postgraduate qualifications and experience in data analysis. The Biostatistics section wish to provide collaborative statistical support to a handful of researchers at (a) Menzies Centre for Child Development and Education (CCDE), and (b) the National Critical Care and Trauma Response Centre. It is anticipated the successful applicant, if full-time, would provide the majority of this support, with professional support and official line management provided by the Senior Biostatistician, and direction on specific project needs provided by the Directors of each Centre, or a person nominated by them.

 

(a) Menzies Centre for Child Development and Education

The successful candidate will be part of a dynamic team working on a range of applied research initiatives, including the evaluation of population-level policy and programs to improve the health, development and educational outcomes of children in Northern Territory. The Centre has a number of large Northern Territory projects (one data-linkage project, and one multi-community school service provision project), as well as smaller studies.

 

(b) National Critical Care and Trauma Response Centre

Researcher teams in remote trauma and disaster medicine, working with small-medium (retrospective and prospective) datasets have been producing several publications.

 

Additionally, Menzies wishes to develop statistical capacity in clinical trials (the expanding Global and Tropical Health Division are running multi-centre clinical trials in the Asia-Pacific Region with collaborative links in Bangkok and Oxford) and health economics and the successful candidate may have the opportunity to contribute to these areas, as well as in other areas such as teaching, as per experience, abilities, other work commitments and funding.

 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.    Provide statistical support to researchers as required

2.    Together with academic research staff, contribute to the development and design of new research initiatives.

3.    Contribute to the writing and preparation of research papers, reports and other materials for publication with regard to the analysis, presentation and interpretation of data

4.    Communicate statistical methods and results clearly

5.    Undertake administrative responsibilities consistent with these roles, e.g. record what data has been analysed, and how, in an organized, easy-to-pick-up manner

 

SELECTION CRITERIA:

Essential:

1.    Postgraduate qualification (Masters or equivalent) in statistics, or in epidemiology or a closely related discipline.

2.    Strong conceptual and analytical skills.

3.    Substantial programming experience in a statistical software package such as Stata, SPSS etc.

4.    Ability to provide sound statistical advice in basic study design, analysis and reporting of research.

5.    Ability to work well independently under broad direction, and in collaboration with researchers.

6.    Good interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, a clear communicator of statistical methods, results etc.

7.    Effective and efficient administration and management processes; including the ability to schedule, establish priorities, work to deadlines and manage multiple tasks under broad direction, or as part of a small team.

8.    Ability to see the big picture, whilst still maintaining a focus on detail and implementation.

 

Desirable:

1.    Experience analysing data, and contributing to papers and reports, in a collaborative research environment.
