Bored with the Olympics before it starts, the Jubilee celebrations not your scene, then perhaps I can tempt you with two great reads?
The first is "A Life Decoded" by Craig Venter. Others have written other genome books but I can't imagine any would be as exciting as this one from the "sailor" who battled the scientific establishment and showed how his method of Shotgun Sequencing, with a massive deployment of funds and computing power, would elucidate the chemical sequence of DNA.

The second is "The Emperor of All Maladies" by Siddhartha Mukherjee, which is the best account of cancer you will ever read. SM is a cancer specialist at Columbia University and has produced a masterly tale accessible to all, both specialist and general reader. It is beautifully written, interweaves all aspects of research and treatments and shows how doctors get it wrong all the time until something better comes along. This book has it all and was the winner of the Pulitzer prize for non-fiction in 2011 - just get it.

With best wishes
