Please find information below on a day-long workshop at the University of Glasgow. Places are limited so please sign up soon http://elan2012.eventbrite.co.uk/. It's free! Using ELAN: an annotation tool for creating, editing & searching annotations in video and audio data 11 June 2012, 10am-4pm STELLA Lab, Ground Floor, University of Glasgow, 6 University Gardens ELAN<http://www.lat-mpi.eu/tools/elan/> is a multi-platform software application for annotating sound or video files to produce time-aligned transcripts. In this one day workshop, students will be given a demonstration of how ELAN may be used to create a searchable corpus of speech data, and how it may be integrated with other widely-used software for phonetic analysis of speech or statistical analysis of linguistic variables. Students will have the opportunity to import their own data into ELAN for analysis. This workshop is suitable for those working with speech data such as long-form recordings of sociolinguistic interviews. Students should have data of their own to work on in a standard audio (or video) format such as .wav, .aiff, or .mp3. No prior knowledge of ELAN is required. The morning of the workshop will be devoted to a demonstration of ELAN and a closely guided tutorial. In the afternoon slot students will set up a corpus of their own data, and begin to annotate their recordings. They will export their data from ELAN to other software applications with hands on help available from the demonstrator. By the end of the workshop, students should be confident that they can 1) annotate their audio recordings in an efficient manner, 2) search their transcriptions in order to address their research questions, and 3) transfer the data to other software for further analysis. ***************************************** Dr. Jennifer Smith English Language School of Critical Studies University of Glasgow 12 University Gardens GLASGOW G12 8QQ Scotland UK Tel: +44 (0)141 330 3171 Fax: +44 (0)141 330 3531 Email: [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> http://www.gla.ac.uk/schools/critical/ ######################################################################## The Variationist List - discussion of everything related to variationist sociolinguistics.
