In terms of cardiovascular fitness, after a runner peaks around age 35,
their cardiovascular fitness level (VO2 Max) starts to decrease about 1
percent every year. For highly fit runners, thats not a big deal.

.

Most runners in their 70s are more fit than 20-year-olds who dont run,
Williford said. The important thing about running is, your fitness goes
down, but you can still improve your performance. It depends on what level
youre at.

.

We find in research studies, the less fit the person is, the greater room
they have for improvement.

.

Many changes in our musculoskeletal system result more from disuse than
from simple aging, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic
Surgeons. Less than 10 percent of Americans participate in regular
exercise, and the most sedentary group is older than 50 years old.

.

The AAOS maintains that stretching remains an excellent way to help
maintain joint flexibility, while weight training can increase muscle mass
and strength, enabling people to continue their daily routine activities
without maximal exertion.

.

Exercise can offset the negative effects of aging, improving
cardiovascular health (lowering cholesterol and blood pressure), and
improving body composition (lowering body fat and increasing bone
density), according to the American College of Sports Medicine.

.

ACSM also points out that exercise increases joint flexibility, and also
increases muscular strength important, because after age 50, strength
decreases 15 percent per decade; and after age 70, it decreases 30 percent
per decade.
