Sue,

All IHR requests are assessed by 1 OHP who has not seen either the individual or their notes before, so can give an 'independent' view as they are acting on behalf of the pension trustees (not the authority) in making the decision.

If it is fairly straightforward, that an IHR will be required (eg Terminal Ca), the OHA tends to start the process by gaining consent for reports and passes it onto the independent Dr. In some cases the individual is not asked to attend into clinic but has a telephone discussion instead. We have an OHP who qualified in Australia so can't do IHR assessments, so occasionally individuals are seen by him initially if it's not  a clear cut decision.

If the individual has been seen by an OHP before, we gain consent to pass the file to the independent Dr.

Hope this helps

Thanks

Kim

[OCC-HEALTH] Ill Health Retirement - Local Government Scheme

Dear list
We are in the process of reviewing our processes and procedures iro the above- is anyone out there working with the LGPS that we can liaise with? At present we are using an OHA for the first opinion, and the second opinion is given by our OHP. When I worked at Hampshire CC we used 2 OHPs. What are others doing?

Kind regards
