Yes, that is correct – they were established for public protection, not for the benefit of registrants.

All universities offering NMC validated courses are subject to regular audits. We had one earlier this year. The review took [lace in two parts and over four days. At the initial visit the Chair of the review gave us an overview of the aims and objectives and she revealed the number of fitness for practice cases involving RNs within their first two years of practice which are currently being dealt with by the NMC. In short the NMC have their hands well and truly full in addition to the cost of these panels. Hence the increase in fees.

I had a conversation recently with someone who stated that I should be mindful of the fact that the NMC`s primary concern is to protect the interests of the public, and therefore  not primarily the interests of nurses. I`m not sure whether this view is right, but if you do take that as a starting point then it does become clearer why they are hiking the cost of registration. Not that  I agree with it by the way, just saying....

Subject: Re: [OCC-HEALTH] NMC to consult on fee increase

Hi Graham,
We are putting this on our website. I'm appalled that those of us who practice within our NMC code, are being penalised for those who do not, surely the fitness to practice costs should come out of a government pot??
Kind regards

Consultation  on NMC fee rise

Last week we announced that our Council  proposed to consult on increasing the registration fee  to £120.

The current registration fee of £76,  in place since 2007, is no longer sufficient to meet  the increasing costs of regulation. This includes  managing the 48% increase in the number of fitness to  practise referrals against nurses and midwives since  2010.

Please encourage staff to have their say,  and to take part in the consultation when it is  launched.

Knowing  when to escalate

Employers  and managers have a responsibility for providing  a clear policy to their staff to raise concerns.

Our guidance on raising and escalating  concerns is for all nurses and midwives, and it  should complement local whistleblowing policies  and safeguarding procedures.

Referring  to the NMC

We  have updated our referral flow chart to help  employers and managers decide if a referral to  the NMC is necessary.

Understanding the  process helps enable employers, managers and  senior nursing or midwifery staff, to make the  informed decisions needed if they want to refer  someone to us.

This useful diagram is  located in the Making a referral section on our  website.

We  want to remind employers and managers the NMC is  switching our core publications from print to  digital copies next month.
