Interestingly blue is advised against as one of the hardest colours for the eye to see....it kind of 'fizzes' and is very fatiguing for anyone with a visual disorder.

I remember being told by an experienced PowerPointer to always have a dark background, lighter text for the same reason. Also easier for people with dyslexia to read (please see recent posts), after a few false starts I now usually use blue/green background with yellow title text and white bullet points as this appears to be the most popular

Some years ago when I was due to do an in-house course I was asked to ensure that any Powerpoint slides used a darkish background with the text in a lighter colour. This was specifically to suit one of the participants who developed a migraine when watching slides using text, etc., on a white background, but not when the slides were the other way around. You might try this with your scientist to see if it helps.

Incidentally, when watching Powerpoint presentations for any length of time where slides have a white background, I find that this is trying on my eyes (I do have fairly severe myopia), but not when the background is dark and the text, etc., in a lighter colour. I have found others who have the same problem.
