Clinical Doctoral Research Fellowship

Clinical Academic Training for Nurses, Midwives and AHPs

The NIHR/CNO Clinical Doctoral Research Fellowship Scheme

The NIHR/CNO Clinical Doctoral Research Fellowship (C-DRF) is aimed at post-degree nurses, midwives and allied health professionals sited in England who have at least 1 year's experience of clinical practice since graduating, have had sufficient research experience or research training to prepare them to undertake a PhD, and who wish to obtain a PhD by research whilst still developing their clinical skills. The C-DRF is an individual training award and offers funding to cover the salary costs of the award holder, their PhD tuition fees, and the costs of an appropriate research project and training and development programme. A C-DRF award will require that the individual has a contract of employment with the Host Employer for the duration of the Fellowship.

Please note that applicants must have current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) or the Health Professionals Council (HPC) at the point of award. Please click here for the list of health professions that qualify for this award.

Further details, including full eligibility criteria and instructions for application submission, can be found in the guidance notes published to accompany the three separate components of the application form.

Round 3 of the NIHR/CNO C-DRF Scheme has now launched

For this round of awards, the NIHR particularly welcomes applications that pertain to dementia research from individuals intending to be hosted by known centres of health research excellence. The host organisation (for example, a NIHR Biomedical Research Centre) need not have any particular track record in the field of dementia research.

Applications answering this specific call will not be judged more favourably than those proposing research within other eligible fields.

The application procedure that must be followed by all applicants is detailed within the guidance notes made available above. Applicants are required to download, complete and submit the following three forms by email, and to submit various signed declarations by post.
