>I have always thought that it had been cut down so that of the lower register
with P. and A., only the names remained; but on looking at it again now I am
suddenly struck by just how long and narrow the original diptych would have
had to be for that to be the case!

but surely the two figures here are not Pete & Paulie, but Phil and Andy?
(where's Pete's beard and, what, did he get a hair transplant?)

it looks to me like, rather than being "cut down" (at the bottom of what we
see here), Pete & Paulie would have been on a separate piece of ivory,
destined to be placed *above* that of Phil and Andy.

agreed, a rather curious arrangement, but one which might have been
necessitated by a shortage of a hunk of ivory of sufficient size to depict
both the figures above *and* their identifying inscriptions?

how big is the piece we've got --8-10 inches tall?

and what is that attribute the figure on the right is holding?
