This is a time of many challenges, but also of opportunity and innovation. Somerset County Council wishes to create a service which meets the needs of Somerset people and is financially sustainable, at the same time as maintaining a network of static libraries and other library provision. Workstreams already well advanced include the introduction of self-service technology and a major service review. Reporting to the Group Manager for Heritage and Libraries, you will have a key role in shaping the future of the service and in ensuring excellent standards across all service points, teams and specialised services. As the County Council’s senior library professional, your key responsibilities will include: Managing the operation of Somerset Libraries Service across its 34 static libraries and six mobile libraries. Overall supervision of some 150 staff across the county and management of the service’s net revenue budget of about £5m. Leading the management of service-wide projects. Managing processes relating to Somerset’s lead role in the LibrariesWest Consortium, which is recognised as one of the leading library consortia in the country. As a senior library professional, you will have strong leadership qualities and be committed to the educational, cultural and social values implicit in the successful delivery of a modern public library service. You must have considerable experience of managing staff, operations and budgets in a large-scale public library service. A background in partnership working with other library authorities is also highly desirable. This is a key moment to join a service that is evolving rapidly. This post offers a rare opportunity to contribute in detail to the redesign of a public library service and to the implementation of new ways of service delivery. You will need to demonstrate that you possess the drive and commitment to play your full part in this process.
