Thursday 19 July 2012, London Smartphone usage in the UK is rapidly on the increase. In 2011, there were 17.6 million mobile phone internet users; this represented 45% of all internet users. Last year, almost half of internet users connected to the internet using a mobile phone did so whilst away from the home or office. The number of applications that are now readily available is also on a steady increase, with users able to shop, read, search, email, keep up with friends, and take and share photographs. In an increasingly mobile world should librarians be worried about their libraries and their collections? Or alternatively, should the information profession be embracing this technology and leverage its use to bring the library, and the skills of the librarians directly to Smartphone users? This Executive Briefing, sponsored by Bowker, will look at a range of ways in which Smartphone and mobile technology is already being used to aid library members, promote services and engage with users.
