I would also speak up for: - Abstracting by subject experts, who can overcome difficulties introduced in full text by papers in foreign languages, papers written in poor English, and papers translated into good English but by people who are not subject specialists. - Indexing by specialists using a controlled vocabulary, so that the same thing is consistently indexed, so facilitating retrieval.
