That’s like a lovely spearhead we had up here, found by a member of the public while digging founds for a shed. The neighbouring farm is called Sword Well, and the next one Battlefield, and there is a local tale of a 16^th century battle against the English. The only parallels I could find for the blade were 16^th century Spanish hunting spears.

 

Item duly sent off to the NMS, who identified it as South African, and probably late 19^th century. [“Zulus Sir, farsans of them!”]

 

Also had an alleged Viking spearhead from near Carlisle, which was almost certainly 19^th century Sudanese.

I like that, maybe I should change the name of the HER entry!

 

Kevin Leahy reckons its West African, which oddly enough matches up with a possible source for 5 pots/bowls found a few weeks ago on Cleethorpes beach!?!

 

I'll still see if I can chase up the owner as its not possible to tell from the photocopy whether it is a composite artifact or not (could it be a bracelet and dagger blade?)
