Noble Gas Mass Spectrometry Technologist

Reporting to the Director of Dalhousie Geochronology Centre (DGC), the Technologist is primarily responsible for the operation and maintenance of the noble gas mass spectrometry laboratory operated by the DGC, with ancillary responsibilities for other analytical instruments. 

 

Key Responsibilities:

·             Conduct noble gas experiments with various mineral phases on a laser-sourced noble gas mass spectrometer (currently VG system for Argon and a custom built automated Helium gas system)

·             Perform routine calibration and quality control on these systems; develop and implement procedures for noble gas experiments.

·             Diagnose and attempt to repair problems with the instruments, carry out preventative and corrective maintenance, and recommend and implement software and technical upgrades.

·             Maintain records for and perform contractual work for Dalhousie and other national and international institutions, including government departments and private companies.

·             Advise, train, and supervise users (students, faculty members, and visiting researchers) in appropriate and safe analytical procedures in the operation of laser-sourced gas mass spectrometers.

·             Operate an X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and train new users, and maintain a CO2 ultra-high vacuum system. 

·             Perform daily administration duties, including scheduling, communications with users and contractors, record-keeping, billing, maintaining a lab budget, ordering of supplies, and maintenance of the laboratory.

 

Qualifications:

Completion of Bachelor's degree in science or engineering with at least five years related experience in a mass spectrometer (or other microanalytical) lab, knowledge of ultra-high vacuum (UHV) systems, and proven competencies in electronics, serial communication and related programming (or an equivalent combination of training and experience) is required. Masters (or M.Sc.) degree highly preferred. Canadian laser operation certification desirable (may be obtained upon job commencement). Excellent organisation, interpersonal, and communication skills are required. Familiarity with interfacing automated mass spectrometer systems with computers using a variety of programming languages and graphical development environments including visual Basic and LabView is necessary.

Salary Range:  $49,562 - $60,441 per annum (32.5 hours per week) (Technologist T-10)
