Our group at the  European Bioinformatics Institute (near Cambridge, UK) has one open postdoc position.

We are looking for a postdoctoral fellow with a strong statistical/mathematical background interested in using mathematical modelling to understand deregulation of signalling networks in disease and to apply this knowledge to novel therapeutics.

Location:EMBL-EBI Hinxton, near Cambridge, UK
Staff Category:Postdoctoral Fellow
Contract Duration:2 years
Closing Date:24 June 2012
Reference number: EBI_00216
Job Description
We are looking for an enthusiastic Postdoctoral fellow to join the Saez-Rodriguez group at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBI-EBI) located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK.

The focus of the Saez-Rodriguez group is to build predictive mathematical models of the transfer of information within mammalian cells using high-throughput experimental data. We combine statistical methods with models describing the mechanisms of signal transduction either as logical or physico-chemical systems. We then use these models to better understand how signalling is altered in human disease and predict effective therapeutic targets, in close collaboration with experimental groups. More details can be found at http://www.ebi.ac.uk/saezrodriguez

The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in the development of methods to model signalling networks based on high-throughput phosphoproteomics measurements, and apply them to solve specific questions of medical and biotechnological relevance with our collaborators.

EMBL-EBI is a world-leading bioinformatics centre providing biological data to the scientific community with expertise in data storage, analysis and representation. We provide a dynamic, international working environment and have close ties with both the University of Cambridge and the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. EMBL-EBI staff enjoy many benefits including excellent sports facilities, a free shuttle bus to Cambridge and other nearby centres, an active sports and social club and an attractive working environment set in 55 acres of parkland.
Qualifications and Experience

The ideal applicant must have a strong background in statistics and mathematical modelling. (S)He should hold a degree in mathematics/engineering or related field, but a degree in biological science with demonstrated experience in computational work (e.g. a post-graduate qualification in computational biology) is also possible. A background in biology is not strictly necessary but highly recommended. A good foundation in (and previous usage of) methods of any of the following fields is advantageous: data mining, machine learning, optimization, systems theory, and dynamical systems.

Previous experience developing mathematical methods  is expected. The successful candidate will have demonstrated ability to work independently and creatively, by accomplishment of a Ph.D. or similar research project. Experience handling and analyzing large datasets (in particular proteomic data sets) is very beneficial, as is communicating scientific results in scientific conferences and papers.

Candidates should have some experience with scientific programming. Ideally, they should be familiar with R, but knowledge of other languages such as Python, Matlab or C/C++ is useful as well.

The postholder will feel comfortable interacting with others in an interdisciplinary setting, since research will run in close collaboration with experimental groups, and should have good written and oral communication skills.
