A very, very neat and creative way to provide an answer to Karl’s query, Ron - excellent!

Here's a quick example using a copy and paste of Bob's text below - the hotpot includes an explanation and suggestion http://mitchellmedia.co.uk/moodle/xertetoolkits/play_298

Hi Karl

Your message made perfect sense and I have faced similar challenges when I have needed to insert text as an image in order to add hot spots in order to explore and comment on different language features. I’ll wait for other more technically experienced XOT users to respond to your query but I just wanted to let you know that your request made sense to me! (I ended up creating text on a PP slide, trying out different font sizes, saving it as an image and then uploading it – a very amateurish and untechnical effort on my part but I ended up with something that was just about acceptable.) Ron did very kindly help me with just this query about a year or so ago but the excellent professional solution he suggested was just beyond my limited technical grasp but I have no doubt that either he or other similarly expert colleagues will be along shortly to give you an explanation and a solution.

regards

Bob

I hope I can explain this clearly…

When I resize (downscale) images in my graphics package it is able to generate a smaller resolution image that still looks crisp. In Xerte I needed a hotspot image that was actually a screen grab of text. I found that if I inserted a high resolution image it got rescaled in Xerte but looked blocky. I couldn’t find any information about the ideal jpeg resolution for in Xerte so played around until I came up with a resolution that looked crisp. This can be seen in the ‘defaultsize’ attached image.

However, in a recent session someone switched to the full screen view, and the text now looked horribly blocky (see other attached image). Obviously any image will be blocky when enlarged beyond its default resolution. However, since we can’t control the size at which the user views a Xerte object (even though we can set the default appearance of it to full screen), it would be great if we could upload an image at a relatively high ‘recommended’ resolution (whatever that is) and for Xerte to automatically downscale it as appropriate. Are there any plans to improve the scaling algorithms in Xerte so that this would work better, giving a clear image at whatever size the object is viewed?

I hope that makes sense!

Many thanks,

Karl
