Smoothing is linear in the data. Regression coefficients are (mostly--see below) linear in the data. So the short answer is that it should be fine. There are some caveats, though. While OLS regression is linear in the data, SPM usually implements some fancy prewhitening which is presumably not linear in the data. (Though it's not clear this really matters much.)
