Surveys for Enhancement Conference

Student surveys such as the NSS are receiving ever-increasing public attention as sources of information for prospective students, and as tools for marketing and recruitment. However, what receives less attention is the effort invested by many institutions in seeking to use student experience data to actively improve their learning and teaching processes and practices.

This conference will bring together research and practice on the use of student surveys for the enhancement of student learning. It will be held on 17 May at the National College for School Leadership, Nottingham.

Sessions will discuss the NSS, the Postgraduate Research and Postgraduate Taught Experience Surveys (PRES and PTES), as well as institutional surveys and national surveys from other countries. Many of the sessions will fall under three themes:

* Using qualitative data to illuminate survey scores

* Developing and measuring student engagement

*         Surveying postgraduate students

In addition to the parallel sessions, the conference will feature keynotes from two invited speakers.

* Professor Keith Trigwell from the University of Sydney is a world-leading researcher on connections between university teaching and students' learning experiences, and his work has helped to guide much current thinking on the use of student experience data for enhancement.

* Gwen Van Der Velden is Director of Learning and Teaching Enhancement at the University of Bath (University of the Year 2011/12) and has led innovative work on engaging students in learning and teaching.
