Scientific Communications Manager, Diamond Light Source

Diamond Light Source is the UK’s national synchrotron science facility, located at the Harwell Science and Innovation Campus in Oxfordshire. By accelerating electrons to near light-speed, Diamond generates brilliant beams of light from infra-red to X-rays which are used for academic and industry research and development across a range of scientific disciplines including structural biology, physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering, earth and environmental sciences.

We are recruiting for a new post to deputise for the Head of Communications. The post holder will lead the planning and delivery of the publications programme for the institute as well as ensure the supervision of the delivery of the event programme, and in close collaboration with scientists and technical staff, develop bids and fundraising strategy for international scientific conferences and workshops.

The individual will lead and deliver communications programmes for scientific user community engagement in communications activities and implement an effective flow of information both within and outside the organisation. • Act as a deputy to the Head of Communications as required;
• Lead yearly communications programmes for information management, scientific user community engagement aligned with the overall 5 year strategy;
• Lead the yearly programme of publications, events and conferences for the organisation with particular responsibility for the planning and delivery of the Annual Review;
• Ensure appropriate evaluations are put into place to monitor the delivery of these programme of activities;
• Be responsible for the creation of statistics for yearly activities to support reporting and PR activities;
• Lead and manage the delivery of Diamond News, technical publications and scientific literature such as proceedings associated with events and conferences as appropriate;
• Create an information resource databank (corporate statistics, presentations, scientific graphics etc.) for use by the organisation;
• In close consultation with Science Directors, research, identify and prioritise scientific and conference papers in collaboration with staff and scientific users to maximise their PR potential in collaboration with the PR manager;
• Supervise the delivery of the event programme for the Institute ensuring adequate resources are in place to deliver the commitments;
• Oversee the various coordinators by taking the lead for the fortnightly company-wide event meeting and ensuring that all procedures and processes are implemented;
• In close collaboration with scientists and technical staff, develop bids and fundraising strategy for international conferences and workshops;
• Host and deliver presentations and tour visits as required;
• Produce reporting and documentation to monitor company-wide events delivery and quality and produce yearly statistics on visitors profile and interests;
• Management of staff, resources and budgets as required.

Qualifications and Experience: Essential

• Excellent project and people management skills;
• Ability to synthesise information quickly and accurately;
• Strong copywriting skills;
• Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines;
• Ability to build relationships quickly and effectively at all levels;
• Extensive experience in science communication or equivalent with a substantial portfolio of communications related publications;
• Experience of  planning and supervising scientific events;
• Knowledge of publishing packages like the Adobe creative suite or equivalent;
• Degree in science or science related discipline or equivalent;
• A creative flair for writing and presenting information;
• Understanding of complex communications systems underpinning communications activities;
• Able to work individually as well as part of team;
• Self-motivated and ethically-minded in dealing with information dissemination.

Qualifications and Experience: Desirable

• Strong interpersonal skills;
• Ability to manage people;
• Experience of matrix working with large scientific  communities;
• Experience in using communications systems including scientific publication;
• Ability to write in another European language;
