The Infirmary is, I believe, linked to Bristol university. As well as the university’s press office, you could also talk to people like those behind SET Squared.

I mention this because I know of one company that has emerged from the hospital, DocCom, and this has benefited from PR support from SET Squared. An organisation like that has a more focussed approach to the press. Unlike the university, which has to deal with things from the VC’s fame and glory through student shenanigans to research, SET Squared is all about banging the drum for technology transfer.

It helps to have knowledge of different areas. This would set you apart from the pack. I suspect that SET Squared is also less well staffed and might welcome a volunteer.

Do not, though, be sucked into doing anything that should be a paying job. Avoid becoming an unpaid “intern”.

Subject: [PSCI-COM] Press Office Experience

Dear Wonderful Psci Commers,

I am a full-time research scientist (biology) doing a part-time MSc in science communication to boot. I am looking to eventually move away from the lab bench, get dressed (I am, after all, a female scientist, and we all know what that means...), and become enthralled in a science communication role. To this end I am applying for jobs in the sector, but finding that most "communicator of current research" positions require press office experience. Of which I have none.

Could anyone suggest ways in which I might feasibly gain such experience, while holding down a full-time job? (I.e. I am unable to take large chunks of time off work for internships in London - I am based in Bristol.)

Any industry-cracking ideas would be welcome.

Many thanks,

Laura
