Hi Laura,

Perhaps UWE could offer you some experience in their press office? They have several different newsletters that go out, including one from the sci-comm department.

Also, Bristol Uni must have a PR dept - could you see what they can offer? Can you create press output (a newsletter/e-newsletter/blog) from your department/unit?

How about contacting Science City Bristol / BBC Bristol and see what they suggest re work experience? I believe the BBC's Focus magazine and wildlife magazines are produced from Bristol, so they may be able to help.

A good place to keep your eye on is Bristol Media Jobs (http://www.bristolmedia.co.uk/jobs). That will give you a good idea of what media/science companies are out there that you could contact for experience.

Best wishes,
Ruth

Subject: [PSCI-COM] Press Office Experience
To: [log in to unmask]

Dear Wonderful Psci Commers,

I am a full-time research scientist (biology) doing a part-time MSc in science communication to boot. I am looking to eventually move away from the lab bench, get dressed (I am, after all, a female scientist, and we all know what that means...), and become enthralled in a science communication role. To this end I am applying for jobs in the sector, but finding that most "communicator of current research" positions require press office experience. Of which I have none.

Could anyone suggest ways in which I might feasibly gain such experience, while holding down a full-time job? (I.e. I am unable to take large chunks of time off work for internships in London - I am based in Bristol.)

Any industry-cracking ideas would be welcome.

Many thanks,
Laura
