Science Media Centre

Events Officer

Salary £25,000 – one year fixed term contract

Would you like to play an important role in improving the way science is covered in the news?

The Science Media Centre (SMC) is looking for an events officer who cares passionately about the way that science is covered in the media. In this brand new role they will deliver a national programme of training events for hundreds of scientists and engineers.

The SMC is an independent press office for science which specialises in responding to the biggest and most controversial science stories that hit the headlines. We have a highly successful ‘Introduction to the News media’ event that, over the last eight years, has given thousands of scientists an insight into the lives of journalists and the chance to quiz reporters on their work. We are looking for someone to develop this series which will be run for scientists around the country and will include both our usual large events and smaller topic-specific ones.

This is an events officer post, but you will also be supporting the press office and keeping abreast of controversial issues. This is not a role for the faint-hearted, so if you can work with a calm head when things are busy and demanding then this is the job for you. At least one year’s experience of events management is essential, whilst a science degree and experience in a press office is desirable.
