Koc University MA/PhD in Design Technology and Society opens calls in the following projects in 2011-2012 academic year.
The program admit all students with full tuition waiver: admitted students do not pay tuition. In addition to tuition waiver and above benefits to all admitted students, we may also offer monthly stipend to the majority of our students.

The applicants must read the 2-month application process carefully, before application.
We are seeking candidates for the following projects:

Smart furniture design for learning centers
Main Investigator: Professor Oguzhan Özcan
The research is about transformation of classic library spaces. Applicant’s research proposal should specifies what is the best smart furniture for future library/learning center. Our furniture company sponsors will help to register and then will commercialize the candidate innovative solutions.

Gestural Design Education
Investigator: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yücel Yemez
This research aims to investigate how to improve the pedagogical model how to teach gestural interface design to students who used to design classical user interface. In this regard, applicants are expected to make original research proposal referring the good reasons. Successful proposals will be developed in our new creative drama laboratory.

Interface Design on Tactile sensed Mobile Display

Applicants can study with Tactile sensed Mobile Display developed specifically in Koc University Mechatronic Laboratory. The applicants with original proposal will be considered to experiment in the Lab.

Tactile Game Design:
Main Investigator: Professor Cagatay Basdogan
A new tactile based media platform developed specifically in Koç University Robotic Laboratory will be used in new game concepts. The applicants with original proposal will be considered to experiment in the Robotic Lab. This research will be based on advanced two side viewed display developed specifically in Koc University Advanced Media Laboratory. Use of Media Technologies in Emergency and Crisis Communication by the Public

Main Investigator: Assist. Prof. Dr. Lemi Baruh
This project aims to identify and create a typology of communication needs in crisis situations (e.g., political crises, protests) and emergencies (e.g. earthquakes, radioactive spills, violent attacks on civilians); describe the various roles that citizens may assume in emergency communications; examine how conventional and new media technologies (and particularly mobile technologies and social media) can be utilized by various citizens groups involved in emergency communications; and summarize ethical issues concerning citizens’ involvement in emergency communications.

Applicant Qualification: Qualified candidate who will work as a Ph.D. or a Master’s student in this project should be highly versed in new media technologies, recent developments in hardware and software applications for social media and mobile communications. Also the desired candidate should have a working knowledge of qualitative data collection methods, including interviews, focus groups, and textual analysis. Proficiency in English and in Turkish is required. Proficiency in additional foreign languages will be a plus
