MA publishes guidelines for internships
The Museums Association has published guidelines on internships, designed to help museums to develop meaningful internships and potential interns to identify appropriate positions. Drawing on best practice developed by Renaissance London and the Mayor of London, Arts Council England and Creative and Cultural Skills, and the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO), the guidelines identify six areas of practice that should be met, including length of internship, planning and structuring internships, and payment of reasonable work expenses. These ensure that internships are structured and that both employer and intern are aware of their obligations.

Museums of every size and type are invited to submit a response before the closing date on 30 April. The data will be compared with the results from the MA's first cuts survey in 2011, providing the sector with an insight into the year-on-year effects of budget reductions.

Blog - On the Road
Last week I made two trips to Wales. The first was to visit a potential Museums Association (MA) conference venue in Cardiff. It's over 15 years since the MA conference was in Wales (mainly because the conference and exhibition got too big for the available venues) and there is a real appetite to take it back there. So I was whisked around on a whistle-stop tour of Cardiff with a few meetings with the top brass thrown in for good measure....

Doll Handling & Packing workshop - St Fagans National History Museum, 28 May 2012
The Welsh costume dolls project has been undertaken to examine the establishment and development of Welsh national costume. The Welsh costume dolls held by AC-NMW at St Fagans and other public collections in the UK have the potential to unlock information about the establishment of Welsh national dress. The careful handling and detailed examination of the dolls has also enabled the team to determine the typology of the dolls and learn more about costume construction.

As part of the project, AC-NMW are running a training day for delegates from regional museums to learn about how to care for dolls in their collections. The day will include a practical session with the chance to handle and pack dolls from the national collection. The workshop is free for delegates to attend and catering will be provided. About the Charities Act 2011
The Charities Act 2011 came into effect on 14 March 2012. It is the Act of Parliament which sets out how all charities in England and Wales are registered and regulated. It replaces:

- most of the Charities Acts 1992, 1993 and 2006
- all of the Recreational Charities Act 1958

It doesn't replace the sections in the Charities Acts about fundraising which haven't taken effect yet, eg charitable collections in public places.

The 2011 Act is intended to make the law easier to understand by replacing four Acts of Parliament with one. It doesn't make any changes to the law. Nearly 500 web pages and PDFs on this website have been updated to refer to the 2011 Act rather than previous Acts.

Your charity doesn't have to do anything differently except refer to the Charities Act 2011 in documents, reports, accounts or statements produced on or after 14 March 2012 (even if they relate to an earlier financial period). However, your documents will still be valid even if you accidentally refer to earlier Acts. You don't have to go back and change any documents you have already finalised before 14 March 2012.

Forward Planning Toolkit
This step by step guidance has been developed to help museums of any size develop a robust Forward Plan. The guidance takes you through the process of drawing up the Forward Plan - believed by some to be more useful than the final plan itself - and suggests practices to ensure that the finished plan does not remain on the shelf but becomes the principle tool for managing and evaluating your museum's performance.

A maritime museum in Caernarfon, Gwynedd, has closed its doors for good and the charitable trust which runs it wound up. The Seiont II maritime museum at Victoria Dock was run by volunteers. Gwynedd council is likely to take on responsibility for most of the artefacts, but loaned items could be returned to their owners. 'Staff cuts' blamed for Nelson thefts at Norwich museum
A lack of front-line staff is to blame for failing to deter thieves at Norwich Castle and spot missing Admiral Lord Nelson items, it has been claimed. Norwich Castle was struck twice by burglars in five days in February, but one theft was thwarted. George Nobbs, vice chair of the museums board at Norfolk County Council, said interpreters that were recently axed at the museum could have prevented it. Artefacts worth £36,800 were reported stolen from the museum in February. The director behind the museums service said staff restructuring was done "with security in mind"

Italian museum burns artworks in protest at cuts
A museum in Italy has started burning its artworks in protest at budget cuts which it says have left cultural institutions out of pocket. Antonio Manfredi, of the Casoria Contemporary Art Museum in Naples, set fire to the first painting on Tuesday. "Our 1,000 artworks are headed for destruction anyway because of the government's indifference," he said. The work was by French artist Severine Bourguignon, who was in favour of the protest and watched it online. Mr Manfredi plans to burn three paintings a week from now on, in a protest he has dubbed "Art War".
