Hi,

The section of the Code that is relevant is Article 7.

http://www.who.int/nutrition/publications/code_english.pdf

Formula milk companies usually argue that what they put into journals is informational rather than advertorial and that any education is scientific in basis.  In this way they have managed to continue with these practices for some years.

Baby Milk Action are very helpful when it comes to application of the WHO Code  http://www.babymilkaction.org/

Hi

I have declined requests to speak at such events and examined my reasons. I did get a response saying my view would be passed on but not any indication of acting on. I also noticed this week that the bmj carries formula adverts, though these seem geared to dealing with medical problems I wonder if these also breach the code.

Carolyn

May I clarify-I will raise with the editor who commissioned my column-

Perhaps you could raise directly with Midwife Editors?

This may need persistence-I suggest saying this isn't a matter of censorship-but respecting the code!

Best wishes

Thank you for raising this concern with the editors Lesley. My first post in this thread indicated the lack of regard that had been given by the editorial board to a couple of my colleagues. I have not contacted them directly myself as there seemed little point given this rebuff.

I have just had a column published-and will raise concerns with the commissioning editor.

Hi Carolyn

I am all for joining the Facebook group, but there are other things we can do to put pressure on the BJM. As a research community, maybe we should stop submitting articles to the BJM for publication. And encourage folk to stop buying the journal until the BJM enters really meaningful dialogue on this issue.

You are correct Nicky, however the "In Practice" Logo along with the Cow and Gate image which appears at the bottom of the poster is a Cow & Gate logo. It is the arm of the company which supports education and research. Formula companies should of course engage in edcuation and research but that does  not mean sponsoring midwifery education. Rather they need to conduct their own research and make sure that information about infant formula is factual and evidence based and not hype and promotion of their own products.

It is important that midwives realise that these study days are sponsored by Cow and Gate. If there is nothing to be concerned about here why does the publicity not state "proudly sponsored by Cow & Gate" This is the usual case when companies sponsor events. They usually want this clearly recognised. If the British Journal or Midwifery are not concerned about this sponsorship, likewise, why are they not clear that these workshops are sponsored by this company.

Please think about getting involved in the "British Journal of Midwifery - You can't be serious group" by following this link http://www.facebook.com/groups/219600838118534/

True Lucie. A major part of the problem is that it is not at all obvious that Cow and Gate have any involvement, many midwives are probably unaware!

Carolyn,
I feel compelled to respond to this discussion thread as I too am alarmed that the BJM are offering free study days to midwives across the UK sponsored by an infant formula company. I would hope that midwives would recognise this as ethically dubious and would see sense to boycott them, but fear that many will see these 'free' study days as an opportunity to gain CPD and to enhance their portfolio. It is shameful.
