'Political leadership and mediated publicness: a horizontal analysis of Conservative party speeches'
As part of a larger-scale analysis of political populism and leadership in Europe and the United States, this paper discusses developments in particular types of political address in Britain since the end of the nineteenth century. The paper focuses on the speeches of a range of Conservative Party leaders, and points to developments in presentation, rhetoric technique, and the construction of the political adversary. It reflects upon the influence of mediatisation on rhetorical strategy, discursive style and on forms of address. Finally, the paper looks at the relationship between the strategies deployed in political speechmaking and dominant political conditions and tries to draw potential lessons for interpreting contemporary political discourse.
