POWERS OF THE FALSE
Institut Francais & Cine Lumiere, London
May 18-19th 2012

When and for what reason is forgery and deception conceptually motivated, even ethically necessary? This two-day programme of screenings and panels addresses the complex ethics of the manipulation of real people and events in documentary, fact-fiction hybrid cinema and artists’ moving image. Inspired by philosopher Gilles Deleuze’s term, the symposium will bring together filmmakers and academic speakers to explore filmmaking as a coercive agency.

Keynote presentation by Stella Bruzzi

Closing Film: DREAMS OF A LIFE followed by Q&A with director CAROL MORLEY and LIBBY SAXTON (QMW)

Panels: FACTION, WAR, HERZOG, SHAPING REALITY, DOUBLINGS, CONTEMPORARY BRITISH CINEMA, ARTISTS’ MOVING IMAGE.

Feature film screenings: Two Years at Sea (Rivers 2011), Buried Land (Eastwood/Rhodes 2010), Close-up (Kiarostami 1990), Sans Soleil (Marker, 1983), Symbiopsychotaxiplasm (Greaves 1968),

Plus a programme of artists’ film & video featuring Charlotte Ginsborg, Anna Lucas, Romeo Grunfelder and Phillip Warnell.
