A few places still remaining for this event tomorrow night... Unlocking the Universe: bibliographic forensics applied to important scientific papers Speaker: Julian Wilson, Christie's Date: Thursday 12th April 2012 Time: 6.30pm Venue: The Square Tavern, 26 Tolmers Square, London NW1 (behind Euston Sq. station) Map: http://goo.gl/dDccr Scientific discoveries do not normally result from individuals labouring in isolation. Communication takes many forms and, as research develops, a corpus of information is built up from which others develop their ideas. In this talk Julian will show how scientific offprints have a long and distinguished role in the history of science, how they may be identified, and why they remain some of the most commercially desired publications by book collectors. Julian Wilson has been a specialist in Christie's Books & Manuscripts department since 2008. Before that he spent eleven years at the antiquarian booksellers Maggs Bros, where he ran the Natural History department. At Christie's he has helped catalogue the Foljambe Collection of natural history books and successfully negotiated the sale of the Max Newman Collection of Alan Turing offprints to Bletchley Park. Julian is fascinated by palaeontology, geology and the earth sciences. He is a past Chairman of the T.E. Lawrence Society. This talk will be of particular value to anyone registered for CILIP Chartership and can contribute towards CPD requirements. Refreshments will be available afterwards.
