I fully appreciate the need for the heritage crime
controlled vocabulary, but surely these terms (architectural theft,
anti-social behaviour, assault) aren't Events in the sense
that HERs would use the word? They don't tie in with the MIDAS Heritage
Investigative Activity information group, ie 'an activity undertaken with
the explicit intention of gathering information about... a Heritage
Asset'. I realise Isobel's example of neat excavation on a scheduled
barrow may have been closer to this, but I don't suppose the perpetrators left
behind 'an information source to record that information and understanding'!
Surely there must be another better place to record illegal or anti-social
incidents - could Management Activity be expanded to include
recording of damage (ie the crime) as one of the
stages?
Best wishes

Dear all,
The English Heritage Data Standards
Unit is currently working with Mark Harrison on the creation of
a controlled
vocabulary relating to crime and the historic environment. It is hoped that this
vocabulary will aid in creating a consistency in recording which will enable
agencies and stakeholders to share the data that they currently hold relating to
heritage crime. The first draft is currently nearing completion; we
will keep the list informed of future
developments.
A concordance table between the draft
thesaurus terms and terms used by the media can be found on page 40
of the report into 'The Extent of Crime and Anti-Social Behaviour
facing Designated Heritage Assets' See:

We have
started to use "Heritage crime" as an event without, at this stage, any further
refinement (such as, for example, illegal metal-detecting, metal theft or damage
to a building or monument).
I'd
suggest that someone gets in touch with Mark Harrison, now at EH, so that any
HER developments can be in line with ARCH.
Best
wishes

Dear all
We are feeling the need to record heritage crime, as events -
does anyone do this, and if so, do you have advice?
Should it come up at HER Forum/HBSMR meetings, as something
needing guidelines?
It's not just nighthawking - we have a scheduled barrow which
recently sported a neat rectangular excavation in the top. I blame TV
archaeology - everyone knows to keep a clean section these days.
