TIMON AUS ATHEN in GERMAN at SHAKESPEARE'S GLOBE with the BREMER SHAKESPEARE COMPANY Many of you will have heard that the World Shakespeare Festival, part of the Cultural Olympiad, opened this weekend. As part of the festival, Shakespeare's Globe is running the "Globe to Globe" project. Over the next six weeks, 37 of Shakespeare's plays will be performed in 37 different languages, based on the various language communities in London. One of these languages is German. As part of the festival, the Bremer Shakespeare Company will be performing TIMON AUS ATHEN at the Globe. There are only two performances: 31st May, 14.30 1st June, 19.30 There is a wide range of tickets available, including five pound tickets in the Yard, and a special two-for-one offer for students in the Yard (bringing the cost of their tickets down to just two pounds fifty!) Doch sowohl Flavius, Timons Verwalter, als auch Apemantus, ein zynischer und misstraurischer Philosoph, versuchen Timon von seiner Geldverschwendung abzubringen. Endlich platzt Timons Luxusblase und er wird insolvent. Von seinen Schoenwetterfreunden abgelehnt, vollzieht Timon eine weitreichende Verwandlung: vom sorglosen Philanthrop zum grausamen Misanthrop. Timon von Athen wirft einen kompromisslosen Blick auf die Welt der menschlichen Eigensucht: absurd und komisch, aber zugleich tragisch und satirisch. Die Bosheit und Heftigkeit Timons werden durch seine Verletztlichkeit gemildet, das Drama zeigt auf mustergueltige Art die Macht und die Schoenheit der Shakespeare'schen Sprache. Fuer die Bremer Shakespeare Company ist die Vorstellung von Timon von Athen im Londoner Globe eine Rueckkehr zu einer ihrer meistbeachteten Erfolge: 1993 war die BSC als erstes Ensemble mit Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor im gerade entstehenden Globe Theatre zu Gast. Das Ensemble hat ueber 40 Shakespeare-Inszenierungen aufgefuehrt, sowohl in Bremen als auch auf Tournee durch Europa und Asien. Jetzt kehrt das Ensemble mit einer wilden und witzigen Aufuehrung von Timon von Athen, einem verstoerenden Spiegelbild unserer heutigen Welt, nach London zurueck. TIMON OF ATHENS SHAKESPEARE'S GLOBE / BREMER SHAKESPEARE COMPANY Timon, a rich and carefree Athenian, showers his friends with gifts and hospitality. Only the cynical and suspicious Apemantus and Timon's steward, Flavius, try to stem the flow of his prodigality. At last, the money runs out and Timon turns to his fair-weather friends for help. One by one they refuse, and Timon, once the city's most carefree philanthropist, turns into its most savage misanthrope. In this unblinking expose of human selfishness, absurd comedy and grotesque spectacle veer suddenly into tragic satire and savage invective. But Timon's virulence is tempered by his vulnerability and the play also contains some of Shakespeare's greatest poetry. In 1993 Bremer Shakespeare Company performed The Merry Wives of Windsor on the building site of the Globe Theatre. They have staged over 40 Shakespeare productions in their home on the western bank of the Weser in Bremen, and have toured throughout Europe and Asia.
