Fully Funded Geodynamics PhD Studentship (UK/EU students)
(Final stages of negotiation)
Mantle circulation – Improving hydrocarbon exploration by
assimilating seismic information
Cardiff University – lead supervisor – Dr. J. Huw Davies, September
2012 start
This is advanced notice of a virtually certain opportunity
for a fully funded studentship (final contract negotiations close to completion).
The project will use mantle circulation models to better understand recent
mantle evolution (since ~200Ma) and test various hypotheses of mantle
structure, deep piles etc. Models will incorporate plate motion history and
present day seismic tomography structure. It will also consider dynamic
topography and mantle heat flow, outputs of interest to our collaborating
hydrocarbon company. The funding will cover extensive computing resources of
High Performance Computing Wales, (http://www.hpcwales.co.uk/); UK/EU fees and maintenance at ~ NERC rates, both for 3.5 years; and also support
for additional costs including attending international meetings.
