Alex,
We use 1st class for normal letters and small amounts of Restricted (ie most personal/sensitive personal data) information, but bump it up to double-enveloped (which is partly so the internal envelope can be protectively marked, but also to guard against the envelope splitting in transit) and Special Delivery for larger amounts such as case files/court papers/subject access requests. We use Special rather than Recorded because it's tracked; if a recorded letter doesn't arrive there isn't a way of finding out where it got to. Obviously Special is expensive, so we can't afford to send everything that way, but that has to be weighed against the damage which might be caused by losing very sensitive information.

I will send separately a table from the protective marking scheme.

[data-protection] Post procedures for sending out personal information

Dear all,

I’m interested in finding out what procedures your organisation has in place for sending out personal information and personal sensitive information by post.  For example, for those in local authorities, does your authority send letters to housing benefit claimants containing name, address, and financial details by hand delivery, first/second class post courier, or Royal Mail special delivery.

Also, I’m finding out whether any guidance on post is included in a protective marking scheme.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Apologies for cross posting.

Kind regards,

Alex
