Call for Papers - Roundtable “Sociological Perspectives on Port City Lives”


Port City Lives: Mobilities, Networks, Encounters

29-30 June 2012 | Blackburne House, Liverpool, UK

Further to the general CFP for this two-day workshop, we invite submissions for a roundtable discussion on the sociological perspectives on port city lives.

Previous social studies on port cities seem to be largely embedded within disciplines such as history, (transport) economics and geography. Next the relevance of each of these as well as the importance of interdisciplinary approaches, the redevelopment of waterfronts and port city lives more broadly also offer unique sites for sociological inquiry. Against this background, this roundtable aims to bring together researchers who (aim to) study port city lives from a sociological point of view. This may situate at the micro, meso and/or macro level, and at the level of grand and/or middle range theories. Insights can further range from classical to contemporary sociological theory, and from urban and environmental sociology to sociology of risk, technology and knowledge. 

In accordance with the rationale of the workshop, we encourage theoretical reflections on port city lives, as well as informal presentations of current research projects, at whatever stage of development. Potential topics might include (but are not limited to) sociological perspectives on:
