Python is a very powerful programming/scripting language that has become popular in structural biology and NMR, and is often used in small scripts as well as in larger software packages like ARIA and Sparky. A major advantage of python is that it is easy to learn and use by non-programmers, and helps speed up time consuming tasks e.g. when handling of large amounts of data.
This workshop is an introduction into python programming using a common application in Bio-NMR, and gets participants up to a level of programming that will improve their performance in their research.
Workshop outline
The first 2 days of the 4-day workshop will get you started with python programming and result in a fully functional script for a real life application: The conversion from CYANA distance restraints to XPLOR distance restraints. It consists of lectures that introduce you to basic python programming concepts, such as
• preparation of the programming environment
• where to search for information
• an introduction to Python basics, with topics like text manipulation, file handling etcetera
which are directly applied to build the CYANA to XPLOR conversion script.
During day 3 and 4 participants will practice their knowledge on an application of their own choice, that will help speed up their research directly.
Who can apply?
The workshop is open to applicants working in EU-member states or in EU associated countries.
Fees and reimbursements
Bio-NMR offers the workshop for free for 6 selected participants from non-profit institutes and provides a reimbursement of up to €475 to cover their travel and accommodation costs. Value Added Tax is excluded from reimbursement.
To be eligible for free participation and reimbursement, applicants must send a Curriculum Vitae, with research interests and a short letter of motivation. Details on the selection procedure are available on the
workshop announcement page.
Applicants that have not been selected for the free participation, and applicants from for-profit institutes, may take part at a special fee of €200 (non-profit) and €400 (for-profit).
