CALL FOR PRESENTERS (April-June 2012): Advanced Quantitative Research Methods Special Interest Group (Quant SIG), Department of Education, University of Oxford

Dear all,

We have begun to organize the new round of Quant Sig seminars for Trinity term 2012, and  would like to invite colleagues to participate. The aim of the Quant SIG is to provide a network for researchers with an interest in advanced statistical research. Sessions are attended by academics, academic-related research staff, and students (MSc, PRS and DPhil) who have at least a basic understanding of - and who are currently using or have used - advanced quantitative methodologies (such as confirmatory factor analysis, structural equation modelling, and multilevel modelling). In general, it is most appropriate for second year students and beyond due to the advanced nature of the statistical methods dealt with, although some MSc and PRS students may find it interesting/useful and are welcome to attend.

The group meets for a weekly seminar where academics and students present/disseminate their academic work and lead quantitative methods workshops. The sessions involve: discussion of the latest developments in quantitative methodology; review of new research topics; providing and receiving feedback on research ideas, grant proposals, presentations and papers. You will therefore have the opportunity to disseminate your work amongst the group for friendly, collegial critiquing, and also informally review the work of your colleagues. Recent past events have included guests such as Harvey Goldstein (Bristol University) and Tom Snijders (University of Oxford).

Sessions typically consist of a 45 minute presentation followed by up to 45 minutes of discusssion. Presenters are welcome to co-present with colleagues should this be more appropriate.

Quant Sig Seminars are held Mondays from 12:15pm to approximately 1:45-2:00pm in Seminar Room J (computer lab), Department of Education, University of Oxford, 28 Norham Gardens, Oxford OX2 7PY. The available dates for the coming term are:

 16 January; 23 January; 30 January; 6 February; 13 February; 20 February; 5 March.

Please contact Patrick Alexander ([log in to unmask]) if you would like to present or if you are aware of a colleague who might like to present.

Best wishes,

Patrick Alexander, Research Officer, SELF Research Centre, University of Oxford (www.self.ox.ac.uk)
