Ironically, the more news about this is disseminated the more it:

1) Reduces the chances of those museums that actually hope to acquire material from doing so.

2) Increases the chances of museums bidding against each other to everyone’s detriment.
The only winner when news of such sales is posted to multiple mailing lists…is the auction house.

Apologies for cross-posting but I would add my urging that this is disseminated as widely as possible. It's in everyone's interest to retain these collections in public institutions.

I imagine that many on this list will want to know about the imminent sale of the entire collection of books and MSS held by the library of the Birmingham Medical Institute. The sale will be in two parts, on Wednesday 18 April (“Medical Books, 1500-1800”) and Thursday 26 July (“Medical Books, Pamphlets & Manuscripts, 1670-1920 plus Pictures & Medical Artefacts”). The catalogue for the first part will be available (for £25) from 26 March, so there is not much time to act, particularly as viewing will be “week of sales 9am-6pm each day and at other times strictly by appointment”.

(These and further details at http://www.dominicwinter.co.uk/)

I suggest that we should all be contacting appropriate libraries and repositories to inform them of this opportunity, as it’s in our collective interest to ensure that as many as possible of these materials are purchased by libraries rather than by private collectors. To my knowledge, the libraries of the following institutions have already been contacted:
Wellcome Institute
Leeds University
Royal Society of Medicine
Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists
