I agree.

As I recall 'Dr' James Gillies is Head of Communications at CERN - PhD in Physics from Oxford - and a top communicator. Also a BA/ BSA Media Fellow (same year as me).

If he / someone with a similar profile applied for this job would he/ she be rejected in the first 'sift' without an interview?!

This is getting insane.

If someone has a PhD and decides that research is not the career for them, then surely communication might be just the thing. I know of several very bright PhD physicists turned writers who have helped CERN in its communications activities.

Interestingly, perhaps, over on the ABSW list another job ad caused ructions when it stipulated “journalistic qualifications (eg, a masters in science > journalism/communication)”. But this was for freelance writers on The Lancet. As one ABSW member, who knows what they are talking about, put it “this is either poorly worded or simply wrong”.

What is it with these people judging bits of paper rather than track record, experience and a cuttings file?

Is it anything to do with the fact that ‘personnel’ is now called ‘human resources’, and its populated by people with degrees in the subject?

This would be an excellent job for a suitably qualified person. But therein lies the rub. Following on from our discussion about science communication and PhDs, note the following section of the CERN job ad…

To me that reads: PhDs need not apply.

So there you go, possession of a doctoral degree can be a liability in science communication. You have been warned. :-)
