Dear
Colleague,
The
International Postgraduate Student Experience
19th
April 2012
University
of Edinburgh
http://www.ukcge.ac.uk/events/eventsarea/intstudent12
Higher
education is an increasingly global market, as students become more mobile and
more willing to look beyond their national boundaries for value education. Many
of our universities have been able to capitalise on the reputation of UK
quality and standards of provision. Maintaining this reputation is important in
an increasingly competitive environment.
Against
a background of growing cultural diversity in the classroom, this workshop is
aimed at academic staff who supervise international research students,
directors of postgraduate studies and administrators with responsibility for
overseas research students, and staff development officers who
"train" supervisors of international research students. The objective
is to enable participants to identify the key issues for supervisors when
working with international research students, and to develop strategies for
managing these issues.
The
day will be built around the perspectives of international graduate students
themselves and the supervisors who admit and supervise them. Participants will
be encouraged, through guided group discussions, to consider where supervisors
fit within the structure for meeting the needs of international research
students within their own HEI. They will also explore possible and appropriate
supervisor responses to the challenges faced by international research
students.
